Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

DURHAM, N.C. - For the fifth time in their last six games, the Pawtucket Red Sox received another excellent seven-inning start, but the PawSox fell 3-1 to the Durham Bulls on Friday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Durham (30-23) grabbed three unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning and limited Pawtucket (24-28) to just a lone ninth-inning run in the opener of the three-game series. The PawSox, who entered the weekend riding a season-long five-game winning streak, brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth.

Despite being saddled with the trio of unearned runs, Cuevas (L, 2-3) was brilliant for the second time in the last six days. The right-hander again went seven innings and only gave up five hits (just three of which left the infield) and a walk to go along with five strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 3.56. Over his last two outings, Cuevas hasn't allowed an earned run in 14 innings, ceding just seven hits. Right-handed reliever Ty Buttrey, who began the night ranked first among International League relievers in K/9 IP ratio (15.00), threw a hitless eighth inning and lowered his ERA to 2.86.

Pawtucket designated hitter Mike Ohlman worked a pair of walks and drilled a solo homer in the ninth inning (his fifth of the season), and catcher Dan Butler went 2-for-3 with two singles and a walk.

Three hours before their parent club, the Rays, were scheduled to send veteran reliever Sergio Romo to the mound to start another ballgame, the Bulls began their night three time zones away with reliever Adam Kolarek, who responded by striking out the side in his one and only inning of work. Righty Ryan Weber (W, 1-2) then spun six shutout stanzas in which he worked around four walks, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and stranding two in the seventh. Hard-throwing closer Diego Castillo (S, 4) gave up a long ball in the ninth but recorded his final five outs via the strikeout to earn a two-inning save.

Durham jumped on the board in the bottom of the third inning when it capitalized on a Pawtucket error and went up 1-0 on a sacrifice fly. The PawSox then had a runner hung up between third and home, but a second error allowed the Bulls to double the lead to 2-0. Stud Bulls shortstop Willy Adames made it 3-0 when he dumped a broken-bat single into right field.

Ohlman led off the ninth by lifting an opposite-field homer to get Pawtucket on the board, 3-1.

The PawSox continue their six-game road trip Saturday against the Bulls at 6:35 p.m. Pawtucket right-hander Chandler Shepherd (3-4, 4.24) is scheduled to oppose Bulls righty Andrew Moore (1-0, 1.69). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with PawSox Insider at 5:05 p.m.

The PawSox will return home to McCoy Stadium on Tuesday to kick off a six-game homestand that runs June 5-10 (Tuesday-Sunday). Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games.
