Buffalo Bisons News Release
Scott Copeland picked up his fifth win of the season in a decisive performance on Independence Day. the righty threw seven innings and gave up two runs in the win.
The Bisons didn't have to wait until after the game to partake in an explosive performance. Their fireworks began in the fifth inning and continued through the arm of Scott Copeland.
The Bisons defeated the RailRiders. 4-2, behind Copeland's dazzling performance and a three-run fifth inning at PNC Park on the Fourth of July. Saturday was the first of four games that will be played over the course of three days.
Buffalo only accumulated four runs, but that is it all it would need behind a game-changing offensive performance in the fifth inning. Trailing 2-1 entering the frame, the Herd put up three runs to take a two-run lead that wouldn't be relinquished for the remainder of the matchup.
The Bisons had five consecutive batters reach base in the inning; three by base hits and two by walks. A Melky Mesa RBI double, followed by a pair of RBI singles by Jonathan Diaz and Matt Hague, pushed the lead to two.
Buffalo's offense wasn't as potent as it was on Friday, where it put up eight runs, but Copeland's performance was enough to pick up the offensive slack.
The righty gave up two runs over seven innings pitched, while giving up eight hits and striking out three. His only blemish was in the second inning, where he gave up three hits and two runs.
Copeland's final inning of work was shaky, but was able to work himself out of a jam from early on in the inning. Copeland allowed the first two base runners of the frame to reach first and third base, but retired the next three batters to exit the inning unscathed. He picked up his fifth win in 10 appearances with the Herd.
The bullpen continued its dominant ways with yet another scoreless performance. Rob Rasmussen and Gregory Infante combined for two hitless innings and only walked two. Infante notched his fifth save of the season and second in three days. The bullpen has not allowed a run in the month of July.
Hague went 2-for-3 on Saturday, extending his league-leading average to .344. The All-Star picked up his 31st multi-hit game of the season and now has 103 hits on the season.
The Bisons will continue their series with Scranton/Wilke-Barre on Sunday and will compete in a day-night double-header, beginning at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m., respectively.
