IronPigs Rally Late, Top Wings 4-3

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to edge the Rochester Red Wings 4-3 Saturday night at Frontier Field, in front of a season-high crowd of 11,893.The series continues Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m., with the Snow Queen and Ice Princess here to greet fans, another Knot Hole Gang Kids' Club game, and kids can run the bases with Spikes and Mittsy after the game. Friday's 16-inning game in Allentown resulted in both teams arriving in Rochester Saturday morning - and with a combined 11 pitchers used Friday, the Saturday starting pitchers had some additional expectations on them. Red Wings righty Tyler Duffey had won his last three starts coming into Saturday, and Lehigh Valley's Aaron Nola had won all three of his starts since a promotion from Double-A.

Duffey set down the IronPigs on nine pitches in the top of the first inning, then shortstop Jorge Polanco made his Triple-A debut for the Wings with a first inning single off of Nola.

Duffey had not allowed an earned run since June 11 (three starts), and the IronPigs made a bid to end that streak in the second inning - with a one out single followed by a walk. But Duffey set down the next two batters on ground outs to wriggle out of the jam.

The Wings hit two balls to the warning track off Nola in the second, off the bats of Reynaldo Rodriguez and Danny Ortiz. Right fielder Jordan Danks made a leaping catch at the wall to take away an extra base hit from Ortiz.

The IronPigs did not make life easier for Duffey, as they put two runners on in the third inning with two singles. With two on and one out, Duffey retired the next two batters, the last one via strikeout, to end the inning and work out of trouble.

Danks reached base on a fielding error by Polanco in the fourth, and came all the way around to score on a double into the left field corner by Aaron Altherr to make it 1-0 Lehigh Valley. With Chris McGuiness at the plate, Duffey fell behind 1-0 then asked for trainer Larry Bennese. A mound meeting with manager Mike Quade and home plate umpire Carlos Torres followed, and Duffey was allowed to throw a few warm-up pitches trying to work through what may have been a blister on his hand. A second unearned run scored on a double play, putting the 'Pigs ahead 2-0.

James Beresford led off the Rochester half of the fourth with a double, and Oswaldo Arcia followed with a mammoth home run over The Nest picnic pavilion to tie the game 2-2. The homer by Arcia was estimated at 457 feet. Rodriguez and Ortiz followed with singles, but Nola fanned Wilkin Ramirez for the first out. Doug Bernier reached on an infield hit to load the bases for Eric Farris. Farris grounded to second base, and beat the throw to first allowing Rodriguez to score on the fielder's choice and putting the Wings ahead 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Danks made another diving catch to rob Ortiz of a hit, but the ball popped loose when Danks hit the ground and the play was ruled no catch despite an argument from Lehigh Valley manager Dave Brundage. Ramirez followed with an infield hit, but Nola stranded the runners by setting down the next two batters.

The IronPigs put the tying run at second base and lead run at first with one out in the seventh, taking advantage of a second fielding error by Polanco, a wild pitch, and a walk. But Polanco started a smooth 6-4-3 double play, and the Wings hung onto the lead.

Seth Rosin took over for Nola in the bottom of the seventh inning, after Nola had allowed nine hits and three earned runs while striking out six. Nola threw 95 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Duffey was through after pitching seven innings and allowing four hits, two unearned runs and four walks while striking out two. Duffey threw 97 pitches, 50 for strikes.

Alex Meyer, who re-joined the Wings today, worked the eighth and the IronPigs tied the score with the help of a break. With one out, Russ Canzler made it to second base when Arcia lost Canzler's pop-up in the lights. Canzler moved to third when Rodriguez made a diving stop to rob Danks of a hit, and scored when Aaron Altherr blooped a single to right. Lehigh Valley went ahead on an RBI hit by Logan Moore, on a play where Ortiz threw a strike home but Altherr slid in safely just ahead of the throw.

The Wings out-hit the IronPigs 11-8; Lehigh Valley had racked up double digit hits in each of their last six games coming into Saturday night. The Red Wings had not lost a game when leading after seven innings until tonight (35-0).

Adam Loewen faced the Wings in the bottom of the ninth inning, and retired the side - helped by a nice running catch by Altherr, who took away a hit from Farris.
