Syracuse Mets News Release

Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs put on a show in front of a packed house at NBT Bank Stadium, beating the Pawtucket Red Sox, 12-4, on Saturday night. Jason Martinson hit two home runs and drove in four. Chris Nelson went 3-3, with a double, a home run and five RBIs. A crowd of 12,526 was on hand - the sixth-largest in stadium history - to watch the Chiefs blast the Red Sox in the series opener.

Both the Chiefs and Red Sox got on the board via solo home run in the first inning. In the top of the first, PawSox left fielder Carlos Peguero hit a solo shot over the right field wall. In the bottom of the frame, also with two outs, Martinson leveled the game with his team-leading 11thhomer of the season.

Syracuse (29-54) took the lead in the bottom of the second off Red Sox starter Keith Couch. Left fielder Ricky Hague led off the frame with a single to center field. Following a strikeout, Hague advanced to third from a Caleb Ramsey single to left. In the next at-bat, Nelson doubled to left, scoring Hague and putting runners on second and third with one out. Catcher Steve Lerud then grounded out on a fielder's choice to first, but Ramsey scored on the sacrifice, putting the Chiefs up 3-1.

Pawtucket (38-46) answered right back off the bat of Peguero in the top of the third. Mike Miller and Jackie Bradley, Jr., led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Rusney Castillo struck out, Peguero blasted his second home run of the night to right-center field. Pawtucket led 4-3 after three innings.

The score remained at 4-3 until the bottom of the fourth inning. Ramsey singled with one away. Nelson, the next batter, recorded his second and third RBIs of the game on a two-run homer to left field, putting the Chiefs up 5-4 after four.

The Chiefs tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Mario Lisson was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Ramsey and Nelson followed the hit batter with back-to-back singles, which drove in Lisson. After Jess Todd came in to replace Couch, Lerud flied out to center, allowing Ramsey to tag from second and advance to third. In the next at-bat, Darin Mastroianni hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Ramsey. With two away, shortstop Trea Turner singled up the middle, putting two men on for Martinson. Martinson connected for his second home run of the night and 12th of the season, this time a three run blast to left, putting Syracuse up 10-4.

Syracuse continued to pile on the runs in the bottom of the seventh. With Pat Light replacing Todd, Lisson singled and moved to third after a throwing error on a Ramsey double and only one out. Nelson recorded his fifth RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to left that scored Lisson. Light then walked three consecutive batters to score Ramsey.

The Chiefs and Red Sox play the second of a three-game series Sunday evening with first pitch set for 5:05 p.m. Syracuse will send right-hander Taylor Jordan to the hill to face Pawtucket left-hander Brian Johnson.
