Bisons Beat Chiefs 4-2 to Split Four Game Set

Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons came out victorious against the Chiefs on Mother's Day at Coca-Cola Field. A strong start from Robert Hernandez, spotless pitching from the bullpen, and key RBI from Domonic Brown and Dalton Pompey helped the Herd even the four game series against Syracuse.

Domonic Brown put the Herd up 1-0 in the first, depositing the ball over the right field fence for his fifth home run of the season. With the Bisons down 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Jio Mier tied the game for the Herd, bringing home Casey Kotchman with a RBI single. Dalton Pompey then gave the team the lead, smacking his second double of the season off the left field wall, bringing the score to 4-2.

"Brown hit the homer in the first, it's been a while since we scored in the first inning, so it's a nice pick-me-up," manager Gary Allenson said postgame.

"I was defiantly seeing the ball a lot better today," Dalton Pompey said. "I was playing, then I wasn't, then playing, then wasn't, and now I'm back, so once I get into a rhythm I'll be fine. Today was definitely a step in the right direction."

Pompey has now played in the last three games for the Bisons, after missing all but two games from April 20 to May 5 due to a bruised left heel.

On the mound, Roberto Hernandez looked sharp, getting ahead in the count against the first six batters of the game. In his third start for Buffalo, Hernandez surrendered only two hits, no walks, and two unearned runs, through five and 2/3 innings. Colt Hynes fanned two of the four hitters he faced in relief, Ben Rowen retired all four of his opponents, and Dustin Antolin notched his first save of 2016, with a perfect ninth inning.

"Great job by Dustin Antolin, that's his first time in the ninth inning, and we've been struggling to figure out who it's going to be in the ninth. "It might not be him the next time, it might be a committee-type thing," Allenson said of the revolving door of ninth-inning men so far in 2016. Antolin is now the fifth different Buffalo reliever to record a save this season.

Hernandez's victory is his first as a Bison since Aug. 29, 2006, when he came into the game in relief against the Ottawa Lynx. His last win as a Bisons' starter came on Sep. 3, 2005, also in a game against Ottawa.

For Syracuse, A.J. Cole labored early, throwing 87 pitches through three and 2/3 innings of work. Cole left the bases full of Bisons in the third, getting Jesus Montero to ground out to end the threat. He ran into trouble in the fourth, surrendering three runs, and was relieved by Sam Runion. Cole's record now falls to 3-2 on the season.

In the fourth inning, after Scott Sizemore reached base on a throwing error by Matt Dominguez, Matt Skole drove in Sizemore to tied the game with run scoring single. In the next at bat, Jason Martinson gave the Chiefs the lead, plating Matt den Dekker, reaching first via an error on shortstop Jio Mier.

David Adams extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the third inning. He was robbed of a second hit in the sixth, as his hot-shot up the middle was speared on the mound by pitcher Sam Runion, who instinctively stuck his glove out to make the catch.

The Bisons will begin a four game series against Durham at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Monday. Arnold Leon will take the mound for Buffalo in his second start of the year, and will be opposed by Bulls' lefty Justin Marks.

BISONS NOTES:

Domonic Brown's first inning homer moves him into the top five leaders in the International League in home runs and RBI... Monday begins a stretch of 10 straight games against non-divisional opponents, with upcoming series against the Bulls, Tides, and Mud Hens... David Adams hitting streak is now at 10 games, and he now approaches Jesus Montero's 13 game streak from April, the longest by a Bison hitter this year.
