Louisville Bats News Release
INDIANAPOLIS, In- The Bats came away with a 5-4 win on Mother's Day after a rain delay pushed the start time back one hour. The Bats won the rubber match of the three-game series by the way of their second multi-home run game of the series.
It was a pitcher's duel and a scoreless game until the fourth inning. Second baseman Cole Figueroa led off the bottom of the inning with a single. First baseman Josh Bell grounded out advancing the runner to second base. Third baseman Jason Rogers advanced Figueroa to third with a line drive single to center field. With two outs in the inning and a one-ball, one-strike count on right fielder Willy Garcia, right handed pitcher Josh Smith threw a wild pitch that made it to the backstop allowing Figueroa to score.
Louisville took the lead in the top of the sixth. Third baseman Jermaine Curtis was plunked by the first pitch of the inning. First baseman Brandon Allen followed him with his second home run of the year and his 196th for his career.
The Bats added some insurance runs in the seventh and ninth innings. In the seventh, Curtis sent a one-ball, one-strike pitch over the left field fence for his first home run of the year. In the ninth, center fielder Bryson Smith hit a two-RBI single into center field after left fielder Jesse Winker singled, Curtis walked, and Allen singled to load the bases.
Indianapolis kept fighting down four in the ninth. Ortiz singled and Easley and Figueroa followed with singles of their own to load the bases. An error committed by Curtis allowed Ortiz Rogers singled to score two more, but it would end that way in favor of the Bats.
Josh Smith (3-2, 2.38) brought home the win after throwing five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run on the wild pitch, two walks, and striking out six. Steven Brault (1-2, 2.70) finished his night early after injuring his ankle running out a throw in the fourth inning. He finished after three innings allowing two hits, two walks, and striking out five.
Louisville travels to Toledo tomorrow to play a double header, with the latter half of the games being the makeup of the postponed game from April, 9th rainout. The first game will begin at 5:35 pm. Neither starting pitcher has yet to be determined.
