Buffalo Bisons News Release

A solid start for Scott Diamond was wasted in the Bisons' 5-0 loss to Syracuse Friday night. Diamond pitched seven innings, allowing just one run, as the Herd mounted just two hits.

The Bisons mustered just two hits Friday night against the Syracuse Chiefs, losing 5-0 at Coca-Cola Field. Syracuse starter Aaron Laffey looked sharp for Syracuse, allowing just two hits and two walk through six shutout innings, picking up four strikeouts. He improves to 3-0 on the year with a 1.50 ERA.

Trea Turner continued his impressive 2016 season for the Chiefs, going 3-4 with a go-ahead sac-fly in the fifth inning to plate the game's first run. First baseman Matt Skole connected for a three-run home run off Pat Venditte in the eighth for his third homer of the season. A solo shot by Pedro Severino made it a 5-0 game in the ninth. Third baseman Brendan Ryan also picked up three hits in the contest.

"Even that at bat where we got the sac-fly, I really don't think I made a pitch that I was upset with, that's a great at bat, a great piece of hitting," Bisons' starter Scott Diamond said postgame on facing Trea Turner.

After Laffey exited the game, Matt Grace threw a one-two-three seventh inning, with Nick Masset and Rafael Martin also pitching scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth innings.

"He's a good pitcher," Bisons skipper Gary Allenson said of Laffey. "Diamond did a great job too, almost matched Lafey pitch-for-pitch."

Scott Diamond did have a strong start for the Herd. He surrendered seven hits through seven innings of work for Buffalo, allowing just one run. His record now sits at 2-3, despite his impressive 2.52 on the year. A sparkling play by Bisons' second baseman Alexi Casilla in the top of the third kept Trea Turner from scoring on a hit from Brian Goodwin, keeping the game scoreless at the time.

"I'm out here to get outs," Diamond said. "We're going to get some wins out here. My job is to just go out there and eat up innings, try to have a bounce-back game after yesterday, and it seemed like for the most part we were able to do that."

Buffalo has now dropped four straight ballgames, and the club remains in last place in the International League North. Meanwhile, Syracuse improves to 17-10, keeping the team in first place in the division.

Game three of the four game series between the Bisons and Chiefs is set for 1:05 p.m. on Saturday. Wade LeBlanc will start for Buffalo, and is scheduled to match up against right hander Paolo Espino.

BISONS NOTES:

Andy Burns was called up to the Blue Jays on Friday, after hitting .250 with 10 RBI for Buffalo this season... Reliever Ryan Tepera was optioned down to Buffalo to open the roster spot for Burns. Tepera will rejoin the Herd, after going 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA in eight games for Buffalo earlier in the season... Burns' promotion makes Junior Lake the only remaining Bison to play in every game for the Herd this season... David Adams picked up a single in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to five games... The two hits for the Bisons on Friday is the least amount the team has accumulated in a game in 2016.
