Toledo Drops Series Opener to Columbus

The first place Columbus Clippers (18-9) defeated the Toledo Mud Hens (11-14) Friday night, as the Mud Hens fell behind 7-2 in the third inning en route to a 9-2 final score.

Columbus notched two runs in the top of the second, but Toledo got one back in the bottom half of that inning when Steven Moya came around to score thanks to a Wynton Bernard single making it 2-1, Clippers.

Daniel Norris (2.1 IP, 8 H, 7 ER, 4 BB, 5 SO) didn't make it out of the third, as Columbus scored five more runs to make it a 7-1 game.

A single off the bat of Dixon Machado knocked in Cameron Maybin in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 7-2, and it was Machado's third hit of the game, as he led the way offensively for the Hens.

Columbus added two more runs in the top of the ninth off of Logan Kensing to make it a 9-2 game, which is how it ended.

Picking up the win for Columbus was Mike Clevinger (5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO).

Pitching scoreless innings out of the bullpen for Toledo was Ruben Alaniz, Preston Guilmet, Drake Britton, and Dustin Molleken.

The Hens are back in action against the Clippers for game two tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. for Star Wars Night at Fifth Third Field.
