
Binghamton Takes Down Erie in Extras

The Erie SeaWolves (18-33) dropped their ninth-straight game as they fell to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (28-23) by a 7-3 final in 11 innings at UPMC Park.
The SeaWolves struck first in the fifth inning against Binghamton starting pitcher Mickey Jannis. With one out, Chad Sedio got aboard with a single, reached third on Kody Eaves' base hit and came in to score on an RBI single from Jake Rogers as Erie went up 1-0.
The Wolves added onto their lead in the sixth as Jake Robson got on with a leadoff base hit, advanced to second on a Will Maddox single, reached third on a wild pitch and came home on Josh Lester's sacrifice fly as Erie took a 2-0 lead.
The Rumble Ponies would tie the game in the seventh. Against SeaWolves relief pitcher Matt Hall, Tim Tebow got aboard with a leadoff after Joey Wong struck out. After Joe Navilhon stepped on the bump for Erie, Levi Michael and Peter Alonso got on base with back-to-back singles. Afterwards, Patrick Mazeika sent a double to center, allowing Tebow and Michael to come around and score as Binghamton tied the game 2-2.
The Ponies would stampede ahead in the 11th as John Mora began the frame on second. Matt Oberste got a leadoff walk followed by Jeff McNeil getting aboard via a throwing error on pitcher Trent Szkutnik. Afterwards, back-to-back RBI Singles from Michael and Alonso brought them home to give Binghamton a 5-2 lead. They would then come around to score on Kevin Taylor's two-RBI single as the Ponies took a 7-2 lead.
The SeaWolves answered in the bottom of the 11th with Robson beginning the frame on second. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, he came in to score on Dominic Ficociello's sacrifice fly as Erie trimmed its deficit to 7-3. However, they advanced no further.
Rumble Ponies pitcher Joshua Torres (4-0) picked up the win, pitching 1.2 shutout relief innings while also picking up a strikeout. Starter Mickey Jannis went seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits, a walk and eight strikeouts.
SeaWolves pitcher Trent Szkutnik (0-1) got the loss, giving up five runs, one earned on three hits and two walks in 1.2 relief innings. Starter Spencer Turnbull hurled 5.2 shutout innings, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The SeaWolves wrap up the series against the Rumble Ponies at UPMC Park on Thursday at 11:05 a.m. on UPMC Health Plan Education Day. Erie will send RHP Kyle Funkhouser (0-3, 4.11 ERA) to the mound while Binghamton will have RHP Joseph Shaw (0-3, 5.40 ERA).
