Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Stephen Alemais capped a three-hit night with a walk-off single and completed a comeback, 4-3 victory for the Altoona Curve over the Akron RubberDucks on Wednesday at Peoples Natural Gas Field.
Jordan George led off the ninth inning for the Curve (24-24) with a single and was bunted into scoring position by pinch-hitter Elvis Escobar. With two outs and two on, Alemais turned on a 1-0 pitch from Henry Martinez (Loss, 0-1) and sent it to the base of the left field wall as George scored the winning run from second.
In his Double-A debut, Eduardo Vera lasted seven innings in the start for Altoona and allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits to go with three strikeouts. After a 1-2-3 first inning by Vera, Bobby Bradley led off the second inning with a solo homer for the only earned run allowed by the Curve starter.
The RubberDucks (31-22) added one unearned run in the third and another in the fourth. Fielding a single to left field by Connor Marabell, Logan Hill bobbled the ball and allowed Andrew Calica to score on the error for Akron. In the fourth, Bradley reached on an error by Alemais and scored on a two-out, RBI single by Ka'ai Tom to give Akron a 3-0 lead.
Altoona's bats came alive in the sixth to get their pitcher clear of a losing decision. Will Craig evened the score, 3-3, in the sixth on his 11th double of the year moments after Jason Martin put the Curve on the board with an RBI single.
Bret Helton (Win, 3-2) kept the RubberDucks off the scoreboard during two innings of relief for Altoona and earned a victory for his second straight outing.
The Curve and RubberDucks complete their three-game series on Thursday morning with Pirates' top prospect Mitch Keller (5-2, 3.69) pitching for Altoona while Akron sends lefty Sean Brady (1-3, 4.29) to the hill.
First pitch on Thursday is set for 10:30 a.m. for Education Day, presented by Subway. Each Thursday in Curve, Pa. is Thirstday, presented by Q94, with two-dollar specials on 16 oz. Miller Lite and regular-sized sodas, plus one-dollar Juniata brand hot dogs. For tickets or more information, visit AltoonaCurve.com, call 877.99.CURVE or stop by the PNG Field box office.
