Binghamton stuns Trenton 8-7

(Binghamton, NY)- Binghamton scored three runs in the ninth inning, and came from behind to defeat Trenton on Thursday night 8-7 from NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton. Binghamton Catcher Josh Thole had five hits in the win.

With Trenton (15-16) leading 7-5 in the ninth inning, Thole led off the bottom of the ninth with a single against Thunder Reliever Jonathan Hovis (0-1), for his fifth hit of the night. Binghamton Designated hitter Josh Peterson followed with a two-run home run to tie the game at 7-7. The home run was his first of the season. With two outs, Left fielder D.J. Wabick doubled to right-center field. After an intentional walk to Right fielder Carl Loadenthal, Shortstop Ruben Tejada reached on an error by Thunder Second baseman Justin Snyder. The error allowed Wabick to score the winning run from second base.

Thunder Shortstop Eduardo Nunez led off the game with a home run against Binghamton Starting Pitcher Dylan Owen. It was the second lead-off home run this week for Nunez. Nunez hit a lead-off home run on Monday night against Portland. Binghamton tallied a run in the bottom half of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk Third Baseman Shawn Bowman. Trenton countered with four runs in the second inning. Outfielder Seth Fortenberry connected on a bases-clearing three-run triple to make it 4-1. Fortenberry increased his RBI total on the season from three to six. Trenton added its fourth run of the inning on an RBI single by Designated Hitter Jorge Vazquez.

Binghamton (15-17) scored three runs in the bottom half of the second to cut the Trenton lead to 5-4. The inning was highlighted by a two-run two-out home run by Second baseman Mark Kiger. The Thunder came right back in the top of the third inning with two runs to knock Owen out of the game. Nunez had a two-out two-run single to increase the lead to 7-4. Nunez finished the game with three hits, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base. Binghamton scored a run in the sixth inning to close the Trenton lead to 7-5. Thole had a two-out RBI single to plate Center fielder Emmanuel Garcia.

Trenton Starting Pitcher Wilkin De La Rosa received a no-decision. He yielded seven hits and four runs (three earned) in five innings. He struck out seven and walked three. Binghamton Starting Pitcher Dylan Owen allowed eight hits and seven runs in 2 2/3 innings. Binghamton Reliever Eric Brown (3-2) came on for Owen and tossed 6 1/3 shutout innings. He gave up only two hits.

Trenton and Binghamton continue their five-game series on Friday night. RHP Zach McAllister (1-1, 2.67) will start for Trenton against Binghamton RHP Jose Sanchez (1-3, 6.23) Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
