New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Norwich, CT---Al Quintana (1-for-4) doubled home Brian Jeroloman with the tie-breaking run in the top of the sixth inning, but Connecticut rallied for a 4-2 win over the Fisher Cats in the opening game of a series Thursday night at Dodd Stadium.
New Hampshire (19-15) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Sean Shoffit reached on a two-out walk and stole second base. He scored when a fly ball off the bat of Bryan Kervin (1-for-3) was dropped in left field for an error.
The Defenders (18-15), winners of six straight games, tied the game on a solo home run by Eddy Martinez-Esteve (1-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) off Fisher Cats starter Luis Perez in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Fisher Cats went back in front 2-1 on the Quintana double, but Cody Haerther was also thrown out at the plate on the play. Jeroloman and Haerther had both been walked by reliever Mike Musgrave.
With one out in the last of the sixth inning, Connecticut 2B Brock Bond (3-for-3, BB, R, RBI) singled and moved to third on a double by Brandon Crawford. The Fisher Cats intentionally walked Brett Pill. Martinez-Esteve hit a grounder to short and New Hampshire forced Pill, but Brad Emaus' throw to first was wide, allowing both Bond and Crawford to score.
Connecticut added an insurance run in the last of the seventh inning on singles by Sharlon Schoop, Antoan Richardson and Bond.
The Fisher Cats threatened in the top of the eighth inning when Brian Dopirak singled off reliever Waldis Joaquin and Jeroloman walked. Haerther bunted Dopirak and Jeroloman up a base, but Joaquin got Al Quintana to pop out and Joe Paterson struck out pinch-hitter Luis Sanchez to end the threat.
Paterson worked a perfect ninth inning for his second save. Matt Yourkin (3-1) pitched 1.1 scoreless to earn the win for the Defenders, who moved to within half-a-game of first place New Hampshire.
Luis Perez (2-4) suffered the loss for the Fisher Cats, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out seven. Celson Polanco pitched 1.2 innings scoreless with three strikeouts.
The Fisher Cats continue the road trip Friday night against the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium. Left-hander Marc Rzepczynski (5-2, 3.11) matches up with right-hander Henry Sosa (2-0, 2.57) at 6:35pm. Radio coverage begins at 6:15pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman.
