Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The Defenders headed into Thursday's game with all momentum but had one thing up against them, Dodd Stadium. Connecticut put the league's worst home record aside and continued to play good baseball as the picked up a season high sixth straight win 4-2 over New Hampshire.
The Fisher Cats got on the scoreboard first in the second inning taking advantage of a walk to CF-Sean Shoffit and another on a Bobby Felmy error on a misread ball off the bat of SS-Bryan Kervin to take an early 1-0 lead.
Connecticut responded in the fourth inning with an RF-Eddy Martinez-Esteve solo jack to left field to tie the game at 1-1. Martinez-Esteve had perfect timing as the rain started to fall heavier.
In the sixth, the Defenders got a one out single by 2B-Brock Bond followed by a SS-Brandon Crawford to put runners in scoring position. 1B-Brett Pill would be intentionally walked to load the bases for Martinez-Esteve who would ground into a fielder's choice that plated Bond but a throwing error on 2B-Brad Emaus allowed Crawford to score. The Defenders took their first lead of the game at 3-2.
The Defenders added an insurance run in the seventh on a Bond RBI single to drive in 3B-Sharlon Schoop who got aboard with a one out single and put the score at 4-2.
New Hampshire had their best chance in the eighth to tie the game or at least trim it to one when they had runners in scoring position. After the call to the bullpen for lefty, Joe Patterson, Fisher Cats' manager, Gary Cathcart went to his bench for switch hitting Luis Sanchez but Patterson won the battle by striking him out.
Patterson tossed a 1,2,3 ninth inning concluding with another strikeout as he picked up his second save of the season in 1.1 innings of work.
Defender's starter, RHP-Jesse Foppert had his best start of the year allowing one unearned run off of just three hits, walked three and struck out five in a season high tying five innings. Reliever, LHP-Matt Yourkin (3-1) picked up the win hurling 1.1 scoreless innings, walking one and striking out two.
Fisher Cats' starter, LHP Luis Perez (2-4) suffered his fourth loss of the season allowing four runs, three earned off of six hits, walked two and fanned seven in 6.1 innings.
Tomorrow's game two matchup has the Defender's RHP-Henry Sosa (2-0) taking the bump against the Fisher Cat's lefty, Marc Rzepcynzski (5-2). First pitch is slated for 6:35pm at Dodd Stadium.
Fridays are always Fireworks at the ballpark. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the Defenders Box Office at (860)-887-7962 or online at ctdefenders.com.
