'Wolves Offense Struggles To Score In Bowie
May 14, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves season-best six-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Bowie Baysox, 6-1, at Prince George's Stadium on Thursday night.
The âWolves struck first in the top of the first inning against Bowie starter Sean Gleason. Scott Sizemore led off the game and doubled to the left field wall on the very first pitch of the game. He advanced to third on a ground out by Max Leon and would later score on an RBI single by Ryan Strieby for a 1-0 lead. Erie however, would not be able to add onto their lead in the first as Gleason induced a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Alex Avila to end the inning.
Gleason would get into trouble in the third and fourth innings as Erie would load the bases twice but fail to come through with a clutch hit.
In the bottom of the third, Bowie would take the lead for good. Joe Nowicki led off with an infield single and Guillermo Rodriguez blasted a two-run home run off of Erie starter Luis Marte for a 2-1 Baysox lead.
Bowie added a run in the bottom of the fifth. Dave Krynzel and Melvin Dorta each singled to start the inning. With one out Mike Costanzo singled home Krynzel for a 3-1 Bowie advantage.
The score would remain the same until the bottom of the eighth. Marte came out to begin the eighth inning but would exit after giving up two singles and retiring one out. Reliever Josh Kite came in and gave up a three-run home run to Nowicki to make it 6-1 Bowie. For Rodriguez and Nowicki, it was their first home runs of the season.
Wilfredo Perez came into the game in the eighth inning with one and went on to retire five of the six hitters he faced to pick up the save, his sixth. Perez has not allowed a run this season.
Marte (2-3) was the tough luck loser. He went 7.1, innings which was the longest he's worked in a game, allowing five runs on 13 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. It was the second time this season where Marte did not issue a walk and the fifth time in six starts where he walked one or fewer. In both of his losses to the Baysox, the Erie offense was only able to muster one run of support.
The âWolves and Baysox will play a doubleheader at Prince George's Stadium on Friday night, beginning at 5:35.
