Aerodynamics...

Bye, Bye Bowie...T

he Aeros got back to their winning ways yesterday morning with a 2-1 victory over the Baysox on the third Education Day of the year. The win prevented a Bowie sweep, which would have been the first three-game sweep by any team over the Aeros since a series at New Britain last August 22-24. The Aeros improved to 9-3 on the season against the Baysox but will not play them again until June 30th when the team travels to Maryland for a five-game series. By the end of the year the Aeros will have played 27 games against Bowie, the most against any opponent in the Eastern League.

Texas Two-Step...

Akron starter Josh Tomlin (4-1) delivered his best start of the season yesterday, going 6.2 excellent innings and allowing just one run on five hits with no walks and a season-high tying eight strikeouts. It was his third quality start of the year and second in a row, tying him with Chuck Lofgren and Frank Herrmann for the team lead. Tomlin matched Baysox starter and fellow Texan Troy Patton pitch-for-pitch as the contest remained scoreless until the Aeros broke through for their only runs against Patton in the sixth. The left-hander, who had defeated Akron twice in two starts earlier this season, extended his scoreless streak against the club to 16.2 innings before DH Matt McBride singled home Jerad Head with two gone. McBride, who moved to second on the play, would score the deciding run a few pitches later when LF Nick Weglarz singled to left-center.

My Closer Vinnie...

RHP Vinnie Pestano picked up his 10th save of the season with a perfect ninth inning in yesterday's victory. The Cal State-Fullerton product is on pace for 47 saves this year, which would shatter the club's single-season record of 29 set by Randy Newsom just last year. It was Pestano's first save since April 29th, keeping him tied for the league lead.

Wild Weglarz...

LF Nick Weglarz continued his recent hot hitting yesterday, going 2-3 with a walk and the deciding RBI. The Canadian batted .471 (8-17) with six walks, two doubles, two runs scored and nine RBI over the six-game home stand, boosting his average 65 points from .147 to .212 entering play tonight (his highest mark of the year). He leads the Aeros in batting average (.448), on-base percentage (.541), slugging percentage (.793) and OPS (1.334) in the month of May, and has driven in 14 of Akron's 48 runs this month (29%). No other Aero has more than five RBI this month.

The Long and Winding Road...

Akron embarks on an eight-day road trip tonight with game one of this five-game series. The Aeros and Curve will play a doubleheader at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, and Sunday's finale will cap a stretch in which Akron plays just three teams (Altoona, Bowie, and Harrisburg) in the first 35 games. The Aeros will finally see someone new when they open a three-game set with Trenton on Tuesday evening, a rematch of the last two EL Championship Series.
