Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

South Bend, IN - The Hot Rods used a four-run fifth inning to break up a no-hitter and steal game two of a doubleheader from the South Bend Silver Hawks, 4-3, on Tuesday afternoon at Coveleski Stadium. South Bend(20-24, 54-59) took the opener 5-4, but the Hot Rods' (23-21, 64-50) game two rally earned a split of Tuesday's twin bill and a split of the four game series with South Bend.

Things looked bleak for the Hot Rods after their game one defeat. In the nightcap, South Bend scored two runs in the first and added another in the second to build an early 3-0 lead. Add in four hitless innings by starter Patrick Schuster (L; 6-4) and the Hot Rods were in trouble heading to the fifth.

That's when things turned around for Bowling Green as the first five hitters all reached in the top of the fifth. Mayo Acosta brought home the first run with a walk followed by a single from Kevin Kiermaier to cut the deficit to 3-2. After a pitching change, Robi Estrada delivered a sac fly to tie the game at 3-3. Cody Rogers then put the Hot Rods ahead with an RBI groundout for a 4-3 lead.

The rally took Eliazer Suero off the hook after he allowed three runs on six hits and three walks over four innings. Suero did a good job limiting the damage, stranding seven men on the day.

Chris Rearick took the ball after the Hot Rods produced their four run inning. He threw three scoreless frames on just two hits to improve to 6-1. He struck out three, including the final out of the game.

In game one, it was the Hot Rods who jumped ahead early with a pair of solo runs over the first two innings against starter J.R. Bradley (W; 5-13). The first scored on an RBI single from Julio Cedeno in the first, plating Cody Rogers for his league-leading 78th run. Castillo then made it 2-0 with his third home run to lead off the second inning.

In the bottom of that frame South Bend retook the lead with its best inning of the series. Ten men came to the plate as South Bend score five runs, highlighted by a grand slam from Jhoan Pimentel for his first career home run.

Bowling Green would answer back in the fourth with two more runs against Bradley. Steve Tinoco was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. He scored a few pitches later on a double to the gap in left by Castillo. Two outs later, Castillo was chased home on a base hit to left by Robi Estrada to cut the deficit to 5-4.

The Hot Rods had one more rally attempt in the sixth against reliever Eury De La Rosa. With two outs, Nick Schwaner doubled down the right field line. Todd Glaesmann followed with a single to left; Schwaner was waved home on the play but a perfect throw from Roberto Rodriguez gunned out Schwaner for the final out of the inning to preserve the 5-4 South Bend lead.

Castillo led the offense in the first game, going 2-3 with a home run, a double, and two RBI. He also scored two of the Hot Rods four runs, but wasn't able to spare McEachern his second loss since rejoining the Hot Rods. He allowed five earned runs on nine hits to fall to 1-2.

The Hot Rods now continue their road trip through Indiana with a three-game series starting Wednesday night in Fort Wayne. LHP Enny Romero (2-5, 4.94) takes the ball against Fort Wayne RHP Zach Cates (3-7, 4.53). First pitch is at 6:05 PM CDT. You can follow the broadcast with Tom Gauthier beginning at 5:40 PM CDT on 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.

The Hot Rods return home on Saturday, August 13 to begin a six-game home stand against South Bend and the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays). The home stand begins with postgame fireworks following the 7:05 PM game on August 13. For tickets, visit www.bghotrods.com.
