Peoria, IL - The Kernels were held to four hits as the Chiefs took their third straight over Cedar Rapids, winning 8-2. The game was scoreless until the third inning when Peoria plated four runs. Back to back RBI doubles by Taiwan Easterling and Rubi Silva scored three runs, giving the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. A RBI sacrifice fly by Richard Jones made the score 4-0.
The Kernels answered back in the fourth inning, cutting Peoria's lead to 4-1. Travis Witherspoon led off with a single and stole second base. He came home on a RBI single by Jeremy Cruz.
Peoria scored once in the bottom of the fourth inning. Arismendy Alcantara plated Micah Gibbs with a RBI single, pushing Peoria's lead back to four runs at 5-1. Peoria's Richard Jones hit his 20th home run of the year in the fifth inning. It was a two run opposite field shot, scoring Taiwan Easterling and giving the Chiefs a 7-1 cushion.
Brian Diemer (8-10) took the loss as he went five innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked none. In the sixth inning the Chiefs added one more run on a RBI single by Arismendy Alcantara. The single plated Rafael Valdes, extending Peoria's lead to 8-1.
Ty Kelley went two innings in relief for the Kernels, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out one and walked none. Erik Gregersen pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning, striking out one. Travis Witherspoon homered to left center in the ninth inning, cutting the Kernels deficit to 8-2.
Frank Del Valle (2-2) picked up his second win for Peoria, going 5.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits. He struck out two and walked none. Luis Liria pitched 3.1 innings for his second save. He allowed one run on one hit while striking out two.
