South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend, IN - With the excitement of the newly renovated Coveleski Stadium sweeping through the Michiana area, the South Bend Silver Hawks are pleased to team with the City of South Bend for a free event showcasing the Cove.

Come support our local law enforcement and fire departments as they play in the free Fire vs. Police Combat Challenge at the newly renovated Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium on Sunday, August 14th. The gates open at noon and the event will be run just like a Silver Hawks game - complete with a fun zone for the kids, on-field skits between innings, and the state-of-the-art video board featuring instant replays and crowd shots.

The challenge features a home run derby and exhibition softball game between the South Bend Police and Fire departments as well as on-field activities for fans. Mayor Steve Luecke will be in attendance, as will former Mayor and current Silver Hawks Team President Joe Kernan.

"We want fans to come out and see what a great new place the Cove has become," said Lynn Kachmarik, Vice President and General Manager of the Silver Hawks. "And what better way to do that than a free event that features and honors the fire and police departments that serve us on a daily basis."

Gates open at noon for the Fire vs. Police Combat Challenge with the homerun derby beginning at 12:30 PM. Following the derby, fans can play catch on the field at 1:30 PM - just like they can before every Sunday home game for the Silver Hawks.

There will be a rededication of the renovated Coveleski Stadium at 2:00 PM. First pitch of the softball game is set for 2:30 PM with player introductions taking place at 2:15 PM. Kids run the bases after the game at 5:00 PM.

There is no cost to attend this fun-filled day at the ballpark, so come on out to the Cove and cheer on our local fire and police departments. Concessions will be available to fans at an additional cost.
