Big Eighth Inning Downs Freedom

The Freedom surrendered five runs on six hits in the eighth inning as Evansville broke open a tie game to beat the Freedom 9-4 on Tuesday night in Florence.

Evansville grabbed the lead in the second inning on a two-run homer by Chad Salem against Freedom starter Alec Lewis.

Florence answered in the third inning with a two-out rally off of Otters starter Matt Trent. Chris Curley hit an RBI double and Willie Holmes followed with an RBI single to left to tie the game at two.

Steve Caseres hit a two-run shot to right in the fourth to put the Otters back on top 4-2.

The Freedom rallied to tie it again in the fifth as Jeff Dunbar hit a two-out, two-run single to knot the score at four.

Evansville's offense exploded in the eighth inning. Jamar Walton hit an RBI groundout to take the lead and then four consecutive RBI hits followed off of Freedom reliever Braden Tullis.

Kevin Asselin pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his first appearance with the Freedom after being signed on Monday.

Willie Holmes was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI, but came out of the game in the seventh inning with a leg injury after pulling up on his way to first base.

Lewis (2-6) gave up five runs in seven frames for the loss. Trent (1-2) held the Freedom to four runs in seven innings for his first professional win.

The series continues Wednesday night as Tim Holmes (3-8, 4.31) takes the bump for the Freedom. First pitch is set for 7:05.
