Grizzlies End Miners Hot Streak

SAUGET, Ill. - The Miners snapped their six-game winning streak by dropping the first game of a seven-game road trip, 13-5 Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark.
Gateway scored nine runs off three home runs to knock Joe Augustine out of the game after three innings. Brad Stone went six innings and picked up his first win of the season after starting the season 0-7.
Charlie Lisk opened the scoring in the first inning with a three-run blast off Augustine. After Matt Fields responded with a solo home run in the top of the second to cut the deficit to 3-1, the Grizzlies went back to work in the bottom of the second inning. Augustine gave up a leadoff single to Johnny Aldaz before retiring the next two batters quickly. With a chance to get out of the inning, Augustine walked Jett Hart. Derek Jennings then hit a two-run double and scored on Joe Agreste's two-run homer, extending the Gateway lead to 7-1.
Southern Illinois was never in the game after the second inning. Gateway added two more in the third on Aldaz's two-run homer to extend the lead to 9-1.
Augustine departed after the third inning, surrendering nine runs off nine hits. His ERA went from 2.84 to 5.40 as he fell to 3-2 on the season. The loss snapped his personal three-game winning streak.
Sean Coughlin and Ernie Banks hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 11-3. Matt Fields's RBI single in the seventh inning gave him two RBIs in the game and cut the Gateway lead to 11-4.
The Grizzlies added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth on Case Rigby's two-run double.
The Miners combined to walk seven batters in the loss.
The Miners will continue the series Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Southpaw Shawn Joy (6-3) will take the mound for the Miners against lefty Andre Caceres, Jr. (2-2, 4.50) for the Grizzlies.
