Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI- The Traverse City Beach Bums had trouble capitalizing on multiple scoring opportunities as they fell to the Lake Erie Crushers in front of 4,906 fans at Wuerfel Park Tuesday night by a score of 4-1.
A big factor in the Crushers win was the performance of Lake Erie starting pitcher Eric Gonzalez-Diaz, who pitched seven innings of one-run baseball while striking out six. The Beach Bums had opportunities in the early innings, including in the fifth when they put runners at second and third base with nobody out before Gonzalez-Diaz retired Beach Bums right fielder Matt Brown, shortstop Jose Vargas and left fielder J.T. Hall in-order to end the threat.
The Crushers struck first in the opening inning on an RBI-single from second baseman Jodam Rivera to jump out to a 1-0 lead. They would add on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings thanks to RBI singles from Lake Erie designated hitter Kyle Boe, catcher Brian Erie and shortstop Andrew Davis to open up their 3-run lead in the contest.
Beach Bums starting pitcher Bryan Banes (9-2) suffered his second loss after lasting just five innings on the mound while allowing three runs in five innings. Gonzalez (2-0) earned his second win in 2011 with his performance. Crushers closer Ruben Flores came on and recorded the final four outs in the ballgame to pick up his sixteenth save of the season.
With the loss, the Beach Bums record falls to 40-39, while Lake Erie improves to 42-38 on the season. Beach Bums center fielder Zack Pace and designated hitter Chase Burch each led the team with two hits in the ballgame.
The Beach Bums-Crushers series continues on What's Up Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Come out to Wuerfel Park and celebrate the birthday party of Beach Bums loveable mascots Suntan and Sunburn!
