Washington Wild Things News Release

Washington, PA-The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, split their doubleheader with the Joliet Slammers on Tuesday night. Washington dropped the first game, 2-1, but stormed back and dominated the second game, winning 5-0.

In game one, a make-up from a rain out in Joliet, Washington was the away team. As a result, the Wild Things scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning, when catcher Jonathan Cisneros hit a home run to deep right-center field. Unfortunately, that would be the only hit the team would garner throughout the shortened seven-inning contest.

Wild Things starting pitcher Gary Lee (2-5) lasted the entire game, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits. Lee walked one batter and struck out five.

Slammers starter Jake Renshaw (10-4) also pitched the entire game and allowed one run (earned) on one hit. Renshaw walked four batters and had eight strikeouts.

In game two, the Wild Things struck first once again. A single by right fielder Luis Rivera in the bottom of the first inning drove in center fielder Chris Sidick.

The Wild Things cushioned their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, adding four runs to their lead. Sidick doubled and drove in catcher Blake Ochoa to begin the scoring explosion; Sidick was later driven in on an RBI double by first baseman Doug Thennis.

An RBI single by designated hitter Scott Lawson drove in Thennis, while left fielder Tim Battle hit an RBI single to bring Lawson home.

Washington starter Chris Smith pitched four innings and allowed no runs on three hits. Smith walked two and struck out four. Reliever Steven Grife entered the game in the fifth inning and earned the win, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Joliet starting pitcher Kevin Crimmel (5-4) spent 4 1/3 innings on the mound and allowed five runs (all earned) on seven hits. Crimmel walked one and struck out one. Chris Pack pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs and just one hit. Pack walked two batters and struck out four more.
