Last Time Out.

On a perfect afternoon for baseball at Silver Cross Field, the Joliet Slammers (47-30) achieved perfection, at least for one home stand. The Slammers knocked off the River City Rascals (55-22) by a final score of 4-1 to sweep the series and win their sixth consecutive game and seventh straight at Silver Cross Field. It's their seventh series sweep of the year and comes on the heels of a sweep of the Gateway Grizzlies at the yard. For the third straight game, the Slammers were out-hit by River City as the Rascals tallied 10 hits to Joliet's six. Tommy Mendoza (6-1) picked up the victory as he scattered eight hits over six innings while only surrendering one run. Mendoza struck out three and walked one. Hector Pellot smacked a solo home run in the first inning to put the Slammers up 1-0 and a Kyle Maunus RBI single in the fourth put them up for good. Ryan Quigley picked up his 25th save of the year.

For Starters Part One.

"Captain" Jake Renshaw leads the Slammers in wins and is coming off a victory over the Gateway Grizzlies on August 10. It was not his best outing but Renshaw gutted out five and a third innings, giving up five runs, all earned, on 10 hits as the Slammers won 7-5. He leads the Slammers in complete games with three with his most recent coming on August 4th against Gateway. Renshaw has beaten Washington twice in two starts this season. His first start of the year came against the Wild Things on May 21 and he went seven innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on eight hits in a 5-4 victory. The right hander's most recent start against Washington came on June 13 where he went eight innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on seven hits in a 3-2 win. Renshaw was a 10th round draft pick out of Ventura College by the Chicago Cubs in 2006. He was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round in 2004 but did not sign. Renshaw spent two years with the Cubs organization and pitched two years at the high-A level with the Orioles organization. The 25-year old right hander put up excellent numbers last year in the Golden Baseball league as he posted a 2.39 ERA in 16 appearances

For Starters Part Two.

This will be Kevin Crimmel's 18th appearance of the season and his ninth start. Crimmel has only made two starts since June 22 but has made the most of them. His last appearance came against the Gateway Grizzlies on August 11 as he went six shutout innings, striking out a Slammers single game record 10 batters in a 5-0 victory. On August 1, he went seven innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits against the Traverse City Beach Bums in a 6-4 victory. The Slammers acquired the left-hander from the California League's Palm Desert Coyotes. Crimmel graduated from Villanova in 2010, tying the school's all-time appearance record at 71 games pitched.

Approaching history..

With his save Sunday night Joliet native Ryan Quigley has a league leading 25 on the year. The league record is 26, shared by Matt Petty of Windy City (2007) and P.J. Zocchi of Oakland County (2010.)

#Winning.

Joliet has set a new season high of 17 games over .500 and has won a season long six in a row.

Taking charge.

The Slammers are a season high seven games up in the East Division. It's been more than a month (the end of play on July 8) since the Slammers took over first place by themselves in the East. They have not surrendered it since taking over. Joliet did not have a lead by themselves at all before July 8.

Pitching is the key.

The Slammers have the third best ERA in the Frontier League at 3.75. In addition, they've held opponents to a .246 batting average, the second lowest opponent's batting average in the league. The bullpen has been especially strong, compiling an ERA of 2.93.

Transaction Wire.

The Slammers placed Catcher Brent Walters on the 14-Day DL yesterday.
