Trenton Thunder News Release
New Britain, CT - Dellin Betances allowed just one hit in his six innings to lead the Trenton Thunder (43-32) to a 6-2 victory and series win over the New Britain Rock Cats (39-32) in New Britain, Connecticut on Sunday. The Thunder offense came alive for the second straight game to give the righty from Brooklyn his fourth victory of the 2011 season. DeAngelo Mack and Jose Pirela both hit solo homeruns and had multi-hit days at the plate. The Rock Cats beat the Thunder on Friday in game one of the three-game set, but the Thunder bounced-back to win two in-a-row and take the series.
After losing his last two starts, Betances worked around four walks to improve his 2011 record to 4-3. The righty only allowed one hit and retired the final eight men he faced. Despite the walks, Betances used two double plays and four strikeouts to face the minimum over his final four frames.
After hitting a two-run homerun and driving in three total runs on Saturday night, Thunder left fielder DeAngelo Mack had another excellent game at New Britain Stadium. It was Mack's infield single that put the Thunder ahead 1-0 in the top of the second. The ball tipped off Rock Cat third baseman Deibinson Romero's glove and into left field, allowing Bradley Suttle to score from second base. Mack later added a solo homerun, his second in as many days, to put the Thunder ahead 5-0 in the sixth.
Jose Pirela also had a big day at the plate for the Thunder. The Venezuelan shortstop hit his fourth homerun of the season, a solo homerun in the third inning, and added a single to grab his fifth multi-hit game in his current eight-game hitting streak.
Thunder switch-pitcher Pat Venditte hurled a scoreless ninth inning to slam the door for his squad, who win their fourth road series of the 2011 campaign. After starting the nine-game road trip 2-5, Trenton finished strong by winning its final two games.
With the season-long nine-game road trip behind them, the Thunder will open a seven-game homestand at Waterfront Park Monday for the first of three games with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Toronto Blue Jays). Trenton's RHP Craig Heyer (6-3, 3.45) will hurl the first pitch at 7:05 PM. New Hampshire will send RHP Henderson Alvarez (4-2, 2.30) to the mound. Tune-in to the game on 91.3 WTSR-FM and on trentonthunder.com. The SBLI Pre-Game Show with Jay Burnham and Hank Fuerst begins at 6:45 PM.
Monday night is MLB Network Night and also the fourth installment of the Thunder's Souvenir Travel Cup series, which will be handed out to the first 1,000 fans ages six and older. The Thunder will also welcome former Major League All-Star and television personality Harold Reynolds as well as award-winning author Liz Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) to Waterfront Park.
