Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (39-35) completed a three-game sweep of the Erie SeaWolves (36-38) with a, 10-1, rout in front of 4,691 at The Diamond on Sunday afternoon. The victory marked the first time the Squirrels have swept a series during the 2011 season.
The SeaWolves did strike first in the ballgame, plating a run against Richmond left-hander Ryan Verdugo in the top of the first inning. Verdugo issued a walk to Erie lead-off man Jamie Johnson. He was bunted to second base, and scored for a 1-0 lead on an RBI single to left-center field from Francisco Martinez.
The Richmond response was harsh and immediate. Roger Kieschnick crushed a two-out solo-home run off of Erie right-hander Brooks Brown in the bottom of the first inning. Kieschnick tied for the team lead with his eighth of the season as the Squirrels tied the game, 1-1.
The onslaught from the Squirrels waited until the second inning when Juan Perez started Richmond with a one-out single. Johnny Monell followed with a hit-and-run single and Brown walked Nick Noonan to load the bases. Francisco Peguero gave the Squirrels their first lead with a sacrifice-fly to center field. Charlie Culberson followed and muscled an RBI single into right field for a 3-1 lead. Kieschnick, Dominguez and Wes Hodges each contributed an RBI single, and Richmond enjoyed a 6-1 lead. The Squirrels sent 10 men to the plate during the uprising, matching their season-high for hits in an inning with six.
The Squirrels kept after Brown in the third, chasing him from the ballgame with another offensive flurry. Perez was again the catalyst, leading off the inning with a double. A batter later, Noonan brought him in with an RBI single. Peguero singled and Brown was lifted, departing after 2 1/3 innings. Right-hander Zach Simons was brought on, and walked Kieshnick to load the bases. Dominguez sent his third hit of the day over the wall in center field on one hop. The ground-rule double brought in two more, and the Squirrels had a 9-1 lead.
Brown (1-2) was tagged with the loss and nine earned runs. He conceded 11 hits, walked one and struck out one in his shortest outing of the season. Verdugo (5-3) settled in following the first inning and was credited with the win over five innings. He allowed just a lone run on three hits, walked three and struck out four.
Peguero capped the scoring for the Squirrels, adding his third single of the day to bring in Monell in the seventh inning. Peguero and Dominguez each recorded three hits in the ballgame for the Squirrels. Kieschnick reached base in all five of his plate appearances.
For the fifth consecutive ballgame, the Richmond bullpen did not allow a run. Right-hander Edwin Quirarte worked two scoreless innings, while righty Jason Stoffel and lefty Wilmin Rodriguez each worked a lone inning.
The Squirrels welcome the Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals) to
The Diamond for the opener of a three-game series on Monday night at
7:05 PM. RHP Henry Sosa (3-0, 0.56) will make the start for the
Squirrels against RHP Tanner Roark (4-3, 5.72) for the Senators.
