Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

MOOSIC, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders will welcome Bernie Williams to PNC Field on Sunday, August 5, for the Breathless Blowout. The New York Yankees legend and musician has partnered with Minor League Baseball to raise awareness for a disease close to his heart -- idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF).

Gates open at noon and the RailRiders play the Buffalo Bisons at 1:05 p.m. this Sunday. Williams will play the National Anthem on his guitar prior to first pitch. During an inning break, Williams and a select group of fans will participate in the "Breathless Blowout" - rallying fans in blowing bubble gum bubbles together in honor of those living with IPF.

Breathlessness is one of the main symptoms of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which can make everyday activities, like blowing bubbles, hard for someone living with the disease. This rare lung disease took his father's life in 2001 and, since joining Boehringer Ingelheim's Breathless campaign last year, Bernie has been on a mission to bring hope and awareness to all those impacted by IPF.

About 50,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis every year. IPF, which causes permanent scarring of the lungs and difficulty breathing, affects as many as 132,000 Americans and leads to approximately 40,000 deaths each year.
