From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians overcame 2-0 and 3-2 deficits and eventually held off the Clippers for a 5-4 victory on Wednesday night. Jerrick Suiter tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the 6th, and Erich Weiss followed with a run-scoring single that made it 4-3. Pablo Reyes clubbed a homer on Josh Martin's first pitch in the 9th, providing a big insurance run for Jesus Liranzo (S, 3) who surrendered a Yandy Diaz sacrifice fly in the bottom half. Columbus led 2-0 through four frames until Max Moroff laced a two-run double into the right-center gap in the 5th. Tyler Eppler (W, 11-5) became the IL's first 11-game winner with 6.2 innings of three-run ball. He allowed eight hits and one walk with one strikeout.
SWISS ARMY SADLER: Casey Sadler recorded four outs in relief of Tyler Eppler last night en route to his second hold of the season. Sadler, 28, has started eight times for Indy, pitched in middle and long relief and closed games, and he's also pinch-hit and pinch-run for the Tribe this season. Since May 3 (22 games/6 starts), Sadler is 6-3 with a 2.43 ERA (17 ER/63.0 IP) and 51 strikeouts against just 16 walks. He owns a 1.13 WHIP and .232 average against (55-for-237) since that date.
I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE: Jerrick Suiter logged his third consecutive two-hit game in last night's 5-4 win, his sixth two-hit performance of the season -- all of them coming at Huntington Park (April 27, June 29, June 30, July 30, July 31, August 1). He hit .429 (12-for-28) with one homer, three doubles, four RBI and seven runs scored in seven games in Columbus; he's hit .155 (16-for-103) with nine doubles, one triple, eight RBI and seven runs scored in 38 games everywhere else in the IL. Suiter's streak of three straight multi-hit games is the third such streak of his career. The first was from May 26-28, 2015 with Single-A West Virginia, all two-hit performances at Lakewood and Delmarva. He also accomplished the feat from July 5-7, 2017 with Double-A Altoona, stringing three-, four- and two-hit performances together vs. Binghamton and at Akron.
SERIES WIN IN COLUMBUS: Indy's 2-1 series win at Columbus was its first at Huntington Park since May 15-18, 2017. The Tribe won the final four games of a five-game series there during that time period. The Tribe split a two-game set in Columbus on July 5-6, 2017, and were later swept in a three-game series that ran from Aug. 1-3 at Huntington Park. Then this year, the Indians lost two of three at Columbus twice (April 27-29, June 15-17) before getting swept in a four-game set (June 28-July 1).
GO AHEAD, TURN TWO: The Indians have bounced into at least one double play in 53 of their 109 games so far this season. The Tribe are 32-21 when grounding into a twin killer.
SACRIFICE FOR THE TEAM: The Indians have hit at least one sacrifice fly in 26 games this season, going 15-11 in those contests. They are 19-12 when recording at least one sacrifice bunt.
5-1 AT FIFTH THIRD FIELD: The Indians are 5-1 at Fifth Third Field this season and have four games remaining on Toledo's home field beginning tonight and carrying on through Sunday. Indy has guaranteed itself at least a .500 record at Toledo for the seventh time in eight seasons.
BY THE NUMBERS - 11: Tyler Eppler earned his league-high 11th win of the season last night. He is the first Tribe player to have 11 wins in a season since Chris Volstad reached that number in 2015. Eppler's teammate, Casey Sadler, was also an 11-game winner in 2014 for the Indians.
