Louisville Bats News Release

COLUMBUS, Ohio. - A rare pitching duel graced Huntington Park on Thursday night as the Louisville Bats (49-58) managed to scrape past the Columbus Clippers (56-53) in a late showing of runs to take the first game of the series, 2-1. The Bats have now won the last 14 of 17 games played.

Left-handed starter Cody Reed (4-8, 4.06) was masterful on the mound for Louisville to earn his fourth win this season. Reed dealt eight scoreless innings before allowing the lone earned run in the ninth. He surrendered four hits while walking one and striking out 10. Tonight's outing was a career high for Cody Reed going 8 and 2/3rd innings.

Each inning was in the hand of the starting pitcher as the game remained scoreless until the sixth inning. The Bats broke through first as Brian O'Grady tripled on a line drive to center field. Gabriel Guerrero followed up with a RBI ground out to push O'Grady home to give Louisville a 1-0 lead.

After a rather non-eventful offensive game, the action escalated dramatically in the ninth. Gabriel Guerrero displayed his talents yet again, smacking his 12th homer of the year out of the park, his second RBI on the night and his 45th of the year, to extend the lead.

Despite the 2-0 deficit, the Clippers weren't going home scoreless. Just when it looked as though Cody Reed might deal a complete game, with Adam Rosales plated at second from a double, Yandy Diaz stepped up and singled on a ground ball to make it 2-1.

With the Clippers closing in, Quackenbush took the mound to close out the game. He walked one and finished the game causing a deep fly ball to center field. Quackenbush now has 19 saves of 21 tries this season.

The teams will be back on Friday night in Columbus for game two of the series. Robert Stephenson (10-6, 3.03) will go head-to-head against Ryan Merritt (1-1, 5.23). First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m.
