Worcester Red Sox News Release
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Worcester Red Sox (29-29) fell for the first time this week against the Buffalo Bisons (32-25) at Sahlen Field, a 4-1 loss on Friday night.
In the bottom of the first, Buffalo jumped on top on a two-run home run by Nathan Lukes, a ball that just snuck over the wall in left-center.
WooSox starter Brayan Bello would not allow another run, tossing six innings of two-run, three-hit ball with eight strikeouts and three walks. The right-hander has now struck out 42 in 28.1 innings of Triple-A work, a league lead since Bello's promotion in mid-May.
Worcester responded in the fourth, a rally that began with a Ryan Fitzgerald single to center. Ronaldo Hernandez was next, and he smashed a double in the gap-the ball was fumbled by the outfielder, allowing Fitzgerald to score.
Hernandez would single later on in the night, making him 5-11 with a home run and three RBI in the series.
Bello departed after the sixth, and the Bisons' bats woke up immediately against Worcester reliever Eduard Bazardo. Nick Podkul made it a 3-1 game with an RBI double, and after a pair of walks, the WooSox went to the bullpen with the bases loaded. A.J. Politi entered, got a strikeout, then hit Nathan Lukes to score a run, extending the Buffalo lead to 4-1.
Politi would get the final out then toss a scoreless eighth, including a strikeout with the bases loaded, lowering his Triple-A ERA for the season to 1.69.
Worcester was held scoreless in the ninth, snapping the team's six-game road win streak.
The WooSox continue the road series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. against the Buffalo Bisons, affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. On the mound, Kutter Crawford (0-0, 7.43) faces Thomas Hatch (3-3, 5.76). Radio coverage is live at 5:45 p.m. on 98.9 Nash Icon and the WooSox Radio Network.
