Buffalo Bisons News Release
BUFFALO, NY - Looking to get back in the win column after a tough start to this six-game series, the Buffalo Bisons defeated the Worcester Red Sox 4-1 on Friday night from Sahlen Field in front of a crowd of 10,228.
Casey Lawrence picked up his eighth win of the season after going seven innings and allowing just one unearned run while striking out seven to drop his ERA to 1.77 on the season. The win also makes Lawrence the first pitcher in all of baseball - majors or minors - to win eight games on the year.
Tanner Morris, who was promoted from Double-A on Wednesday after slashing .312/.430/.468 with 30 walks and 30 strikeouts in 43 games with New Hampshire, recorded his first career Triple-A hit to lead off the first. He would come around to score two batters later when Nathan Lukes hit his fourth home run of the year to left-center field.
Lukes' homer marked the first run the Bisons had scored in 22 innings, dating back to the first inning of game one of Wednesday's doubleheader.
Brayan Bello, who got the start for the WooSox, settled in nicely after giving up the homer to Lukes in the first. The Red Sox' fourth-ranked prospect went six innings allowing three hits and two runs while punching out eight.
The Bisons tacked on some much-needed insurance runs in the seventh when Nick Podkul doubled home Stevie Berman, before Lukes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.
Another Triple-A first was the debut of reliever Mike Ellenbest, who was promoted to Buffalo today after pitching to a 2.16 ERA over 8.1 innings in Double-A. Ellenbest, a 24th round pick by Toronto in 2016, pitched two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three while recording the six-out save.
The Bisons and WooSox will meet again tomorrow evening, with Thomas Hatch set to face righthander Kutter Crawford. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EST.
