Iowa Cubs News Release

TOLEDO, OH - The Iowa Cubs (25-32) dropped their fifth straight on a comeback victory by the Toledo Mud Hens (29-27), losing 7-6 on Friday night at Fifth Third Field.

The I-Cubs struck first when Nelson Velazquez drove in Dixon Machado, who had doubled, with an RBI single, putting them up 1-0 after half an inning. The Mud Hens had a quick answer in the bottom half of the inning, however, with Trayce Thompson launching a two-run home run to put them in the lead, 2-1.

Iowa wouldn't let that score stand for long either, though. Narciso Crook reached on an error to lead off the second, Carlos Sepulveda drove him in with a double, and then Sepulveda scored himself on an RBI single from Machado. That gave the I-Cubs the lead back, at 3-2.

Crook added a little more insurance with a solo shot in the third, putting the I-Cubs up 4-2, but Brendon Davis matched him with a home run of his own in Toledo's half of the fourth, narrowing the I-Cubs' lead back to one.

That's where it would stay until the top of the seventh. Levi Jordan led off the inning with a double, and after another Toledo error, Darius Hill drove him in for the fifth Iowa run. Not done yet, Iowa's offense added another in the eighth on three straight singles from the bottom half of their order.

That put Toledo down 6-3 entering the bottom of the ninth. After Aneuris Rosario put the first two men on with a single and a walk, Brendon Little took over for the I-Cubs. The Mud Hens had his number, taking three more walks - one intentional - and using two wild pitches to tie the game at six with the winning run on third. From there, Josh Lester hit a game-winning sacrifice fly, and Toledo took the game and the series by a final score of 7-6.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Iowa's five straight losses now matches their season-high losing streak, first set May 26 to 31.

Caleb Kilian lasted 3.2 innings and gave up three runs in his first start since returning from Chicago.

After Brendon Little's blown save in tonight's game, Iowa's bullpen is 9-for-20 in save opportunities.

Dixon Machado extended his hitting streak to a team-high ten games with a 2-for-5 night.

Iowa will continue the series with Toledo tomorrow evening, when they will play the fifth of six games. First pitch between the I-Cubs and the Mud Hens is set for 6:05 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
