Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Gilberto Celestino's eighth-inning RBI single was the difference Monday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium as the Cedar Rapids Kernels picked up a 3-2 victory over the Burlington Bees. The Kernels (26-17, 65-48) have won five consecutive contests overall and eight meetings in a row with the Bees (15-28, 54-59).
Monday's game started as a pitchers' duel between Andrew Cabezas and Kyle Tyler. Cabezas and Tyler each pitched five innings with one run allowed apiece. Tyler tossed a career-high-tying eight strikeouts as well.
Early runs left Cedar Rapids and Burlington tied at 1-1. Livan Soto hit a leadoff double in the first inning and moved up on Kevin Maitan's groundout before scoring during a sacrifice fly from Adrian Rondon. The Kernels loaded the bases within the third inning and pulled even when Yunior Severino delivered a sacrifice fly that plated Daniel Ozoria.
The Kernels surged ahead in the sixth for a brief lead. A leadoff single by Albee Weiss and a double from Trevor Casanova put a pair of runners in scoring position. Tyler Webb walked to load the bases, and Ozoria's sacrifice fly drove in Weiss for a 2-1 advantage. However, Justin Jones brought the Bees level, 2-2, by hitting a leadoff solo shot during the seventh.
Celestino put Cedar Rapids back in front, 3-2, within the eighth inning. Casanova walked to open the frame ahead of Webb's single. Back-to-back force outs left runners at the corners for Celestino. Spencer Steer took off from first base on a 2-2 pitch that Celestino grounded into right-center field for Webb to come in from third base.
Alex Schick (5-1) faced the minimum over two scoreless frames and tallied his fifth relief victory. Cedar Rapids also improved to a Midwest League-leading 25-11 in one-run games. Ethan Clark (0-1) gave up the decisive run and suffered the loss.
