Loons Rally in 9th to Beat Cubs 3-2
August 5, 2019 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs were on the brink of finishing off the Great Lakes Loons in the top of the 9th on Monday night from Four Winds Field. With a 2-1 lead, Eugenio Palma was tasked with saving the game for the Cubs. On a pitch to Jair Camargo with two runners on, the Loons catcher gave Great Lakes the 3-2 lead on a double that ultimately won them the game.
Despite the late inning rally by Great Lakes, there were many positives to take out of Monday night on South Bend's side. First, starter Peyton Remy continued his strong showing out of the rotation with six innings of one run baseball and five strikeouts. Over Remy's past two starts, he has struck out 11 combined hitters.
Remy was also able to escape all the jams he fell into. The biggest jam-saver came in the top of the 5th when the Loons loaded the bases with just one out. Remy fired back to strike out James Outman, then got Leonel Valera to bounce into an inning-ending groundout.
Offensively, South Bend plated all of their runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The new kids continue to shine for the Cubs as Jake Slaughter and Zac Taylor kept their hot bats going. Slaughter started the inning with a triple off the center field wall, and then was immediately brought in on a bouncing double down the left field line by Marcus Mastrobuoni.
With Mastrobuoni at second base, Taylor also chopped a double to the left field corner to score the Cubs catcher. It was a 2-1 Cubs lead after three innings.
After Remy departed, Palma worked two shutout innings to lead up to the 9th. Down to their final out, Camargo ripped his double over the head of right fielder Nelson Velazquez. In the bottom of the 9th, South Bend went down 1-2-3 to end the game.
With the loss, the Cubs fall to 61-50 on the season, but still remain just a game out of first place in the Eastern Division. They will have the opportunity to finish off the series in a tie tomorrow night in the finale at 7:05 PM.
