Beer City Tourists Drop Series Opener

June 2, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- The Beer City Tourists dropped their fourth straight contest on Thursday night and fell back to .500 on the season with a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Greenville Drive. Beer City was unable to take advantage of Greenville's starting pitcher Dedgar Jimenez and failed to make any noise against reliever Anyelo Leclerc.

The Tourists did take a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning. Yonathan Daza successfully executed a safety squeeze bunt to score Mylz Jones from third base. Beer City would leave the bases loaded in the inning. After Greenville tied the game with a run in the top of the third, the Tourists once again left the bases loaded in the bottom half.

The Drive used a three-run fifth inning to break the game open. Kyri Washington clubbed a two-run triple to right field and later scored on Mitchell Gunsolus' sacrifice fly. Sam Hilliard gave the Tourists a run in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly of his own, but Tate Matheny's seventh inning solo Home Run provided the game's final scoring.

Leclerc entered the game in the sixth inning and pitched four shutout frames to earn a save. On an interesting note, Leclerc was forced to bat twice after the Drive lost the ability to use the DH. The pitcher was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts.

Salvador Justo made his Asheville Tourists debut by tossing two innings and striking out four in a relief capacity. He topped out at 99 MPH with his fastball.

Beer City will look to even up the series with Greenville on Friday night with a 7:05pm contest against the Drive. A fireworks show is scheduled at McCormick Field following the game.
