Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Zach Thompson teamed up with three relievers to shutout the RiverDogs, 1-0, on Thursday at Joseph P. Riley Jr. Park in Charleston. Kannapolis (21-33) snapped a four-game losing skid despite managing a season-low one hit offensively.

Thompson (5-2) struck out seven batters, one shy of his career-high while scattering six hits and a walk over 5.0 shutout innings to earn the win. The 6'7" Texan worked into and out of a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the fifth inning, striking out back-to-back batters before inducing a groundout to get out of the frame unscathed.

Tanner Mendonca pitched a scoreless sixth but got into trouble in the seventh. The RiverDogs loaded the bases against Mendonca with two outs before reliever Jack Charleston struck out Kyle Holder to end the threat. Charleston left 12 runners on base on the night.

Yelmison Peralta took over for Charleston with a runner on first and one out in the bottom of the ninth. Catcher Seby Zavala threw out the RiverDogs base runner Jeff Hendrix trying to steal second, and Peralta fanned Chris Gittens to complete the shutout and earn the save (1).

Kannapolis broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a run without the benefit of a hit. With one out, Bradley Strong and Johan Cruz walked while Tyler Sullivan was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Cody Daily dribbled a slow grounder to the second baseman which brought home Strong for a 1-0 lead off RiverDogs starter Daris Vargas.

Vargas (4-2) worked 5.0 innings, giving up one hit, which did not contribute to the run he allowed. He walked four and struck out two while being tagged with the loss. Charleston reliever Anyelo Gomez did not allow a hit over 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out five and walking two.

Kannapolis was last 1-hit on July 25, 2014, in a 5-1 loss at Hagerstown when Suns pitchers Lucas Giolito and Joseph Webb combined to beat the Intimidators.

These two teams continue this 3-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as LHP Tanner Banks (6-3, 2.57 ERA) makes his 11th start for Kannapolis against Charleston's RHP Christian Morris (3-1, 2.22 ERA). The Intimidators return to Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System on Monday, June 6, to open a 7-game home stand. The upcoming home stand features Teacher Appreciation Night presented by Learning Rx (June 9), Craft Beer Sampling Night presented by Cabarrus Brewing Company (June 10), Fireworks Night presented by Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Associates (June 11), and Bark in the Park presented by South Ridge Veterinary Hospital (June 12).
