Columbia Fireflies News Release
COLUMBIA, SC - Columbia welcomed Hagerstown to Spirit Communications Park for the first time this season on Thursday, but the Fireflies fell to the Suns, 6-3. Ivan Wilson was the spark at the plate. The center fielder pounded two run-scoring doubles and reached base safely three times.
The Suns jumped out to an early lead after the first two innings. Kelvin Gutierrez, Rhett Wiseman and Telmito Agustin each drove in a run off of Columbia (28-26) starter Joe Shaw (L, 3-3). Hagerstown scored four runs in the second inning to take a commanding edge, 5-0.
The home team cut into the deficit in the last of the fifth. Jeff Diehl nailed a triple down the right-field line to start the frame. After Jose Garcia walked, Wilson hit a seeing-eye double into shallow center field to bring Diehl home. Two batters later, David Thompson laced a single to left field to plate Wilson.
The slugger was at it again in the sixth. Wilson mashed another double, this time to the right-center field gap. Milton Ramos, who led off the frame with a base hit, scored from third base to cut the Suns' advantage to two, 5-3. That was the only run Hagerstown (34-19) reliever Mick VanVossen (W, 1-1) allowed.
The Columbia bullpen finished the game strong. Witt Haggard made his first appearance since April 10 and pitched a scoreless sixth inning. Johnny Magliozzi tossed the last three innings and allowed just one unearned run.
Columbia and Hagerstown battle again on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Manager Jose Leger hands the ball to right-hander Chase Ingram (3-4, 4.40). He takes on Suns righty Pedro Avila (3-3, 3.28).
