RiverDogs Shutout, 1-0, in One-Hit Wonder by Kannapolis

June 2, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs put the pressure on the Intimidators several times, but failed to execute in the key moments, costing them a 1-0 loss to Kannapolis in front of 4,595 at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Thursday night.

Charleston (31-21) had runners on in every inning, but found no answers to push any runs across going 0-for-10 on the night with runners in scoring position. The RiverDogs left 12 runners on base against Kannapolis (21-33) pitching.

Jeff Hendrix went 3-for-4 with a walk, adding key production from the leadoff spot in the loss.

Daris Vargas (4-2) entered the fifth inning for the RiverDogs, having given up just one hit on the night. After a fly out to begin the fifth, Vargas issued two walks and a hit by pitch before Cody Daily stepped to the plate and grounded out to second, driving in Bradley Strong to put Kannapolis on the board, 1-0.

That would be all the Intimidators would need on the night as the Kannapolis pitching staff, while relenting nine hits to Charleston, was able to keep the runners at bay.

Charleston threatened in the bottom half of the fifth off of Kannapolis starter Zach Thompson (5-2) as they chased him with two singles from outfielders Nathan Mikolas and Leonardo Molina along with a walk of Hendrix to load the bases with no outs. Thompson fought back with two strikeouts of Hoy Jun Park and Chris Gittens before getting first baseman Connor Spencer to ground out to second to end the threat.

Anyelo Gomez relieved Vargas from the sixth inning on, working four strong innings allowing no hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

The RiverDogs again presented a pressing situation for the Intimidators pitching staff in the bottom of the seventh as Charleston loaded the bases up again, but were unable to capitalize for the second time. With one out, Hendrix singled to center which was followed by a walk issued to Park. With the bases loaded situation presented to him for the second time, Gittens couldn't size up the opportunity striking out for the fourth time in the game. Gittens finished the night 0-5 with five strikeouts, ending a 33 game reached base streak, the longest stretch of any hitter in the South Atlantic League this season.
