Pawtucket Red Sox News Release

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Pawtucket Red Sox starter Jalen Beeks carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning and struck out a professional career-high 11, propelling the PawSox to a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Bisons on a chilly and damp Saturday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field.

Beeks (W, 2-1) only allowed two baserunners through five innings (an error and a walk) and, in total, punched out 11 in 5.2 innings, yielding just three hits and a couple runs. The 24-year old left-hander retired the first 11 batters he faced before Buffalo placed its first baserunner aboard on a Pawtucket error in the fourth. Beeks issued a two-out walk in the fifth inning but responded by striking out Buffalo first baseman Jason Leblebijian on three pitches for his 10th punchout. Beeks then collected his 11th strikeout to begin the home half of the sixth, but Buffalo broke up his no-hitter with three straight two-out singles. In four starts now this season, the former Arkansas Razorback has piled up 37 strikeouts in 19.2 innings.

The PawSox (11-8) carried a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning before they cracked the game open with a four-run frame. The Bisons (5-8) threatened late with two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh, but the PawSox stamped their sixth win in their last eight games.

Pawtucket right-handed reliever Kyle Martin struck out a pair and allowed an unearned run, while southpaw Bobby Poyner entered in the seventh and got a big strikeout to strand a pair, and fellow left-hander Williams Jerez got the final three outs en route to his third save of the season.

PawSox second baseman Ivan De Jesus went 3-for-5 with an RBI and left fielder Ramon Flores added a pair of hits, as the Pawtucket offense outhit Buffalo, 12-4.

Buffalo starter Joe Biagini (L, 0-2) gave up five runs on seven hits and a pair of walks in 5.1 innings.

Pawtucket struck first in the top of the third inning. After a pair of singles and with runners at second and third with one out, PawSox catcher and No. 3 hitter Mike Ohlman lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate center fielder Rusney Castillo and make it 1-0.

The PawSox again threatened in the top of the sixth inning and loaded the bases for first baseman Jordan Betts, who had homered and doubled in Friday's series opener. With Biagini nearing 100 pitches, Betts cleared the bases with a three-run double to center and widened the lead to 4-0. Two batters later, Mike Miller supplied a run-scoring single to stretch the margin to 5-0.

Beeks recorded the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Buffalo then strung together three consecutive singles to break up the no-hitter and crack the score column, 5-1. The third single, from catching prospect Danny Jansen, chased Beeks. Right-hander Kyle Martin then entered, and Buffalo garnered another run on a wild pitch that plated shortstop Danny Espinosa and made it 5-2.

The Bisons loaded the bases in the seventh against Martin, and Dalton Pompey coaxed a one-out, bases-loaded walk to trim the gap to 5-3.

De Jesus provided insurance with an RBI single to score Ohlman in the top of the ninth.

The PawSox conclude their three-game series in Buffalo on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. PawSox right-hander William Cuevas (1-0, 3.86) is scheduled to oppose Bisons righty Deck McGuire (1-1, 7.00). Radio coverage on WHJJ (920 AM and 104.7 FM) and throughout the PawSox Radio Network begins with the pre-game show at 12:35 p.m.

The PawSox return home for a three-game series Monday-Wednesday against the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins). Good seats are available, and fans can visit the McCoy Stadium box office, which is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. through 5 p.m., and during all home games.
