Clippers Start Home Stand on the Wrong Side of Lopsided Final
April 28, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Columbus Clippers News Release
The Indianapolis Indians came into tonight's game with just one home run in 17 games. Tonight, they hit three, guiding them to a 17-5 win in game one of a three-game Clippers home swing.
Indy jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two RBI singles, a RBI double and a RBI groundout in the first.
The Clippers put up one in their half of the first on a Yandy Diaz groundout to score Greg Allen, who stroked a leadoff double.
Both teams notched two runs in the third inning, highlighted by a Kevin Kramer two-run blast over the scoreboard in right-center for Indianapolis that made it 6-1. The Clippers scored on a first-and-third play and a Brandon Barnes RBI double in their half to pull within 6-3.
The Indians' Austin Meadows cranked a solo shot in the fourth to extend the lead to 7-3.
The Clippers had an opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the inning with the based loaded, but Tanner Anderson induced a double play ball to escape the jam unscathed.
Indy tacked on seven more runs in the top of the fifth on doubles by Eric Wood and Chris Bostick, a Robert Zarate wild pitch, a Meadows single and a Jose Osuna two-run homerun.
They put up three more in the sixth on a bases-loaded double play ball, a Kevin Newman RBI single and a Meadows RBI double to give themselves a 17-3 advantage.
Clippers reliever Luke Eubank made his debut in the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless frame.
The Clippers found a little magic in the bottom of the ninth when Gio Urshela doubled in Allen to make it 17-4. Eric Haase then singled into center to score Diaz, making it 17-5, but that was all they could muster.
23 hits and 17 runs are each season highs for the Indians.
The Clippers and Indians will be back at Huntington Park tomorrow night at 7:15 p.m.
