Beede strikes out eight in season debut
April 6, 2019 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Sacramento River Cats News Release
West Sacramento, Calif. - Right-hander Tyler Beede returned to the mound as a starting pitcher and delivered an impressive performance for the Sacramento River Cats (1-1), but the club fell 6-5 to the Tacoma Rainiers (1-1) in game two of the season.
After being moved to the bullpen in 2018, Beede revamped his pitch arsenal and it paid dividends on Friday night as the former Vanderbilt star struck out eight batters in four scoreless innings. It was the most strikeouts recorded by Beede since a June 7 outing back in 2017 at Raley Field against the Fresno Grizzlies.
Despite taking a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning, things began to unravel for the River Cats as bullpen arm Chase Johnson allowed five runs on five hits in innings five and six. Rainiers first baseman Joey Curletta delivered the crushing blow in the seventh as his opposite-field solo home run broke the 5-5 tie.
The River Cats expect a large crowd on Saturday as they play game three of this five-game series with Tacoma. Fourth-ranked prospect in the organization RHP Shaun Anderson (0-0, No ERA) gets the nod for Sacramento while the Rainiers will counter with RHP Tyler Danish (0-0, No ERA). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT). Catch all of the action live online at rivercats.com, on the MiLB First Pitch app, on the air on Money 105.FM, and live on CW-31 (KMAX).
Additional Notes
- Stephen Vogt's third-inning solo home run marked the first long ball of the season for the River Cats. Vogt clubbed 16 home runs in his 95 games with the River Cats from 2013 to 2014 before earning American League All-Star honors in 2015 and 2016 with the Oakland A's.
- Though he allowed the go-ahead homer, right-hander Carlos Navas provided crucial relief for the bullpen as he ate up 3.1 innings while striking out five batters and walking none.
