Iowa Cubs News Release

NASHVILLE, TN - The Iowa Cubs (2-1) sent 13 batters to the plate in a seven-run third inning on their way to a 10-4 victory over the Nashville Sounds (1-2), Saturday at First Tennessee Park.

The I-Cubs put up double-digit runs on nine hits with the help of nine walks and a Nashville error. The miscue led to five unearned runs on starter Wes Benjamin. Iowa walked just twice in the first two games of the season.

Jim Adduci had the only hit through two for either team, but the Iowa offense exploded in the third. Dixon Machado set the tone with a leadoff single and the bats stayed hot as Johnny Field cracked a two-RBI double, and Adduci helped the cause with a sac fly. Two runs were pushed in with bases-loaded walks before Ian Happ capped the inning with a two-RBI single.

Patrick Wisdom broke the shutout in the fourth with a three-run home run following back-to-back walks from Matt Swarmer to open the frame. It was the only blemish on the 25-year-old's line as he allowed three hits, three earned runs, walked three and struck out three through 5.0 frames.

Iowa added to the scoreboard in the seventh on a Taylor Davis two-run homer and a Happ RBI double. Happ is 4-for-14 with two doubles and six RBI through three games with the I-Cubs.

Brad Markey, added to Iowa's roster from Eugene today, helped Iowa shut down the Sounds as he spun 2.0 hitless innings. Dakota Mekkes contributed 1.0 perfect frame before Nashville got to Tim Collins in the ninth. The Sounds put up a mini-rally with one run on two hits and a walk before giving way to an I-Cubs victory.
