Oklahoma City Comets News Release
Oklahoma City - Pinch-hitter Paulo Orlando lined a go-ahead RBI triple into the right field corner in the eighth inning to break a tie and pitcher Stetson Allie retired all three batters he faced in the ninth inning to send the Oklahoma City Dodgers to a 4-3 win against the San Antonio Missions Friday night at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
The Dodgers picked up their first victory of the 2019 season in front of a crowd of 5,160 as they continued their five-game season-opening series against the Missions.
The Dodgers (1-1) had taken the lead in the seventh inning when infielder Jake Peter connected on a two-run homer out to straight center field. Peter, who celebrated his 26th birthday Friday, put the Dodgers in front, 3-2, with his first homer of 2019.
A RBI double by San Antonio's Tyrone Taylor tied the game, 3-3, in the eighth inning before the Dodgers answered in the bottom of the frame.
Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera reached on a fielder's choice before Orlando entered the game to pinch-hit for pitcher Josh Smoker and put the Dodgers back in front with his RBI triple that scored Carrera.
The Missions (1-1) had taken the game's first lead in the third inning when Tyler Saladino hit his second double of the night to bring home a run for a 1-0 Missions lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Carrera lined a single into right field then came around to score when Angelo Mora followed with a double to knot the game, 1-1.
A RBI single by Corey Ray put the Missions back in front, 2-1, in the fifth inning.
The Dodgers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth inning when Matt Beaty and Will Smith connected on back-to-back hits and former Dodgers pitcher Donnie Hart issued an intentional walk to Cameron Perkins. Hart then got Carrera to strike out and Mora to line out to escape the jam.
Dodgers starting pitcher Daniel Corcino racked up seven strikeouts over 5.0 innings in his season debut, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk. He led the charge as Dodgers pitchers totaled 12 strikeouts in the win, marking the team's second straight game with at least 12 K's. Oklahoma City pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts in Thursday's season opener.
Smoker (1-0) pitched one-third of the eighth inning to secure the win before Allie entered the game and retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of 2019.
Missions pitcher Miguel Sanchez (0-1) was charged with the loss, allowing Oklahoma City's go-ahead run in the eighth inning.
Infielder Daniel Castro finished the night with a game-high two hits for Oklahoma City, while Carrera scored twice.
The five-game series between the teams continues at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
