Hershey Bears News Release

Never in the history of the HERSHEY BEARS Hockey Club had a team ever won more than 50 games in a season until Sunday night. HERSHEY rallied from a one-goal deficit in the third period to win the contest in the closing seconds for the franchise's 51st win of the season, winning 3-2 in Philadelphia against the Phantoms.

Neither team would score in the first period, with Philadelphia receiving a seven-minute power play late in period one. Pete Vandermeer, in his second game back from a leg injury that had sidelined him since January 12, picked up a two-minute instigating minor, fighting major, 10-minute misconduct and game misconduct for going after Philadelphia's Jonathan Matsumoto. The BEARS fired eight shots at Philadelphia goaler Martin Houle, while HERSHEY'S Maxime Daigneault faced just six Phantom attempts.

Mike Green opened the second period with a short-handed goal at 1:17 to give the BEARS a 1-0 lead. HERSHEY would put 11 shots on Houle in the second, scoring just the one goal. Daigneault held the Phantoms at bay, stopping all nine shots he faced. Into the third period, Darrell Powe scored a short-handed goal at 9:48 to tie the game at 1-1 before Stefan Ruzicka gave the Phantoms a 2-1 lead at 13:40. With a potential franchise record for wins hanging in the balance, the BEARS tied the game with three minutes left with Andrew Joudrey's second goal of the season. With just six seconds left, Alexandre Giroux scored his 42nd goal of the season to put HERSHEY in the win column for the 51st time. Daigneault earned his eighth win against Philadelphia in eight decisions, and also won his team leading 23rd game of the season.
