Sound Tigers Edge Admirals In Regular Season Finale

BRIDGEPORT, CT - The Norfolk Admirals (50-22-6-2) concluded the 2006-07 regular season with a 5-3 setback to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (36-37-1-6) on Sunday afternoon at The Arena at Harbor Yard. The Admirals enter the first-round of the Calder Cup Playoffs as the third seed in the East Division and will begin their best-of-seven series against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday at Wilkes-Barre.

The Sound Tigers took a 2-0 lead after one period on a pair of power play goals. Sergei Ogorodnikov found the rebound of a Jamie Fraser shot and fired it home at 1:39. Tomas Malec doubled the Bridgeport lead when he poked a rebound past Admirals goaltender Mike Brodeur at 10:11.

The Admirals battled back in the second period to tie the game at 2-2. Troy Brouwer netted his 41st goal of the season by re-directing a Pierre Parenteau feed past Bridgeport netminder Michael Mole at 2:54. Norfolk tied the game with less than five minutes remaining in the middle stanza on the power play. Martin St. Pierre sent a pass from the left half-wall to Bryan Bickell in the slot. Bickell sent a wrist shot past Mole glove-side at 15:08.

St. Pierre gave Norfolk a 3-2 lead 2:18 into the final frame. The Sound Tigers made an errant pass from the left corner into the slot. St. Pierre collected the puck and sent a snap shot into the net for his 99 th point of the season.

The remainder of the game belonged to Bridgeport. Fifty-four seconds after St. Pierre's tally, Steve Regier knotted the contest at 3-3. His shot from the bottom of right circle snuck under Brodeur's left leg at 3:14. Masi Marjamaki netted the go-ahead goal after completing a shorthanded breakaway with a shot that beat Brodeur five-hole at 8:33. Kyle Rank added an empty-netter at 19:02.

Brodeur (32 shots, 28 saves) got the loss. Mole (34 shots, 31 saves) earned the victory.

Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Bridgeport was 2-4.

The Admirals finished the season with 108 points. Despite entering the game tied with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in points, they will finish as the third seed in the East Division regardless of the outcome of the Penguins' game against Syracuse this evening. The Penguins own the tiebreaker with one more victory than the Admirals. Norfolk and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton will meet in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs starting next Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, in Wilkes-Barre.
