Beach Bums Drop Game One to Greys
June 7, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums were held without a hit into the eighth inning and the Frontier Greys used a big third inning to help the Greys to a 12-2 win on Friday night.
Greys starter Eric Wooten did not allow a baserunner until two outs in the fifth when Sean Gusrang reached on an error with two outs. Wooten would walk a batter each in the next two innings, but carried his no-hitter into the eighth. He got the first batter, Marcus Nidiffer on a fly out to left for out number one. Gusrang came up again and hit a chopper to the left of the mound. Third baseman Brock McCallister charged, but his throw to first was late as Gusrang crossed the base safely to break up the no-hit bid. On the very next pitch, Wooten (2-1) lost his shutout as Zach Kometani hit a double over the head of the centerfielder to score Gusrang.
Bother starters cruised into the third inning as neither allowed a baserunner through the first two frames. Jacob Clem got the first batter of the third before Luis Parache bunted his way on and moved to second on a throwing error by Clem. Two batters later, Parache stole third and Mike Gallic walked to put runners on the corners with two out. A single by Justin Vasquez scored Parache to make it 1-0 Greys. Mark Micowski followed with a triple to bring home Gallic and Vasquez to pump the lead to 3-0. It looked as if the Beach Bums would get out of the inning as Balbino Fuenmayor hit a fly ball to rightfield that was dropped by the fielder on the warning track. The defensive miscue opened the door for four unearned runs and a 7-0 Greys lead.
The Greys would expand the lead as they scored single runs in the fifth and sixth and two in the seventh. Each team plated a run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
Wooten wound up going eight innings allowing two hits and one run. Jacob Clem (2-3) took the loss for Traverse City.
One bright spot for the Beach Bums was the relief pitching of Chris Squires. The right-hander dazzled for two innings, striking out five along the way. Additionally, Taylor Wrenn reached with an infield single in the ninth, extending his hitting streak to a Frontier League best 12 games.
Game two of the series comes up on Saturday night at Andrew Morris (0-0, 0.00) starts for the Beach Bums against Graham Johnson (0-2, 4.26) for the Greys.
