June 7, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped the opener of a six-game home-stand as the Southern Illinois Miners put up a huge second-inning rally on the way to a 9-3 win on Friday at the Corn Crib.
The Miners opened the scoring right away with an unearned run as Tyler Hall reached via error to lead off the game and went to second on a walk to Tyler Stubblefield, then scored on a base hit to right by Carlos Mendez. Stubblefield scored on a fielder's choice and Mendez came home on a single by Mario Mercedes to give the Miners a 3-0 lead after a half-inning.
The CornBelters quickly answered in the first as Mike Schwartz led off with a double followed by a walk to Pat McKenna, and both were driven in by a liner to right by Romulo Ruiz to cut the Miners' lead to 3-2 after one inning.
Southern Illlinois picked up seven runs in the second inning, all after two were out, to end the night for Normal starter Drew Provence as the Miners led 9-2 in the second.
The Belters inched closer in the third inning when McKenna led off with a base hit and went to third on a Steven Felix single, then scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Ruiz to cut the deficit to 9-3.
Preston Vancil (2-0) pitched six innings of seven-hit ball for the win while Provence (2-1) took the loss.
The second game of the six-game home-stand is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
