Last time out

The Slammers prevailed 7-2 over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Thursday to take the series two games to one. It was the Brett Zawacki show on the mound as he went six and two thirds innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits. He struck out eight batters along the way. Michael Wing had a big day at the plate for Joliet, going 2-4 with a run scored, a double and two RBI. Grant DeBruin was 1-2 with a double, two RBI and a walk while Javan Williams went 2-5with two runs scored and a RBI. Wing's double in the first was a big part of the Slammers' four-run first inning. Joliet was also helped by two run-scoring balks from Windy City starter Travis Strong in the frame. The Slammers would explode again for three more runs in the fourth inning of play, capped off by DeBruin's two-RBI double. Chase Doremus was outstanding out of the bullpen, striking out six in two and a third innings.

For Starters...

Jacob Sanchez is coming off back-to-back 10-strikeout performances, both no-decisions. Most recently, he went eight innings, giving up one run on four hits against the Lake Erie Crushers. The Slammers would win the game in extra innings by a score of 3-1. Sanchez had a very impressive rookie season for the Slammers. In 11 starts he posted a 5-2 record with a 2.89 ERA. Sanchez struck out 45 batters and walked only 15. The right-hander went at least six innings in eight of his 11 starts. Before coming to Joliet, Sanchez was the Midwest Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2012. Sanchez finished the 2012 Iowa Wesleyan season with a 10-2 record and a 2.42 earned run average, including 111 strikeouts, 12 walks, 71 hits allowed and 28 runs allowed (25 earned) in 93 innings pitched. He led the MCC in strikeouts and innings pitched, was second in wins and third in earned run average and opponents' batting average (.208). Sanchez obliterated the Iowa Wesleyan single season strikeout record, becoming the first player in school history to go over 100 K's in a season, and also tied the school record for wins in a season. He also was a recipient of a Gold Glove award with one error in 29 chances in the field.
