Rockford Aviators News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - In a game between two struggling offensive teams, Friday night baseball at Aviators Stadium proved to be the most entertaining of the season as the Rockford Aviators took game one of the three-game series with the Windy City ThunderBolts, 2-0.
Rockford's ace Drew Rucinski earned his first victory of 2013. The right-hander from Broken Arrow, OK tossed a season-high 8.1 innings and struck out a game-high 11 batters in his shutout effort. Rucinski struck out five straight batters and seven out of eight during the middle three innings of the game.
Offensively, the Aviators knocked on the door all night, but couldn't push across a run until the eighth frame. With runners on second and third and nobody out, Windy City turned to relief pitcher Michael Click, who hadn't allowed an earned run in 10.2 innings of work. Matt Greener finally broke through for the Aviators with an RBI single past a diving Michael Torres at second base to make it 1-0. Two batters later, veteran Jereme Milons singled home the second run up the middle to wrap up the scoring.
Nick Cicio came in to close the door after Rucinski walked Torres in the top of the ninth with a man on first and one out. Cicio picked off Zach Aakhus at second base, and on the next pitch, struck out Chad Cregar to end the ball game.
Rockford and Windy City will square off tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans 21 and older will get Rockford Aviators sunglasses, presented by Bud Light.
