Aviators Victorious in Joliet, 1 Win from Playoffs

September 5, 2015 - Frontier League (FL)
Rockford Aviators News Release

JOLIET - The Aviators emerged victorious 9-7 in a well-fought battle at Silver Cross Field Saturday night. The Aves used a 5-run, 2-out explosion in the 7th to turn a 4-4 tie into an insurmountable lead. Devon Rodriguez finished with 3 hits, including 2 doubles, in the game.

The Aviators started David Diaz, who surrendered 2 in the first and 2 in the fifth. The Aviators overcame an early 1-run deficit and took the lead in the 4th on RBI base hits by Brian Bistagne and Justin Fox before the 2-run fifth by the Slammers evened things up.

Danny Stienstra went down to his last strike against Slammers ERA leader Dan Tobik in the 7th before singling to right to keep the frame alive. Devon Rodriguez would then follow with a base hit of his own to bring home Cameron Garfield and make it a 1-run lead. Brian Bistagne followed 2 batters later with a double to right to open the game up further.

The Aves led 9-5 heading to the ninth but the Slammers made it very interesting by blasting 2 solo HRs and loading the bases against Matt Frahm. But Frahm was able to induce a foul out off the bat of DH Mason Snyder to lock up the victory.

David Diaz got the win, the second of his pro career. The victory was the 49th of the year for Rockford. It guarantees a winning season in 2015 and takes the Aviators a step further in clinching a postseason spot. They will seal their place in the playoff picture with any of the following tomorrow: a win at Joliet, an Evansville loss vs. River City, or a Florence win at Southern Illinois.

First pitch tomorrow will be thrown in Joliet at 5:05. Tony Rizzotti is expected to start for the Aviators. It will be the final regular season game for both the Aviators and the Slammers.

A live stream of the game will be available through rockfordaviators.com.
