NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, mustered only five hits and ended an eight-game winning streak with a 5-2 loss to the Schaumburg Boomers on Saturday night at the Corn Crib.
The Boomers broke open the scoring in the fifth inning when Willi Martin led off with a double and scored on a base hit by T.J. Bennett. An error sent Bennett to second on his hit and he scored on a two-out single by Cam Sherrer for a 2-0 lead.
The CornBelters cut the deficit in half in the sixth inning with a lead-off double to the left field corner by Tyler Shover, who scored on a fielder's choice by Jason Merjano, but the hosts left runners at the corners to keep the score 2-1.
Schaumburg extended the advantage to 5-1 in the seventh on a three-run homer by Michael Valadez to the left field lawn.
The Belters led off the ninth with two singles and scored Pat McKenna on a Cameron Monger fielder's choice, but the late rally fell short.
Brett Mabry (8-3) threw eight innings and held the Belters to three hits and one run (earned) with one walk and three strikeouts for the win. Jake Negrete (3-1) worked six innings and took the loss, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
